| Quote: | ..Varities of Sakura
There are many different species of sakura in Japan, which can be classified by such criteria as the number of petals per blossom, blossom color, time of blooming, and the shape of the tree. Below are some of the common terms in sakura taxonomy;
1) Someiyoshino
The Yoshino Cherry is Japan`s signature sakura. This might lead one to believe that the Yoshino Cherry is as old as the imperial line, but in actuality, this sakura was carefully developed by planters in the late Edo period (mid 19th century). Therefore, the appearance of Yoshino Cherries in any historical dramas depicting Japan`s ealier era is an anachronism.
2) Yamazakura
Literally "mountain cherry", yamazakura is a wild variety of sakura native to the mountanious regions of Southern and Western Japan. The blossoms are relatively small and have five slightly pink petals. Yamazakura can live for hundreds of years.
3) Yaezakura
The "eight-layered cherry", yaezakura is commonly a generic term for any sakura whose individual blossoms have more than five petals. Trees that fit this definition range from the Ukon, with 10~20 petals per blossom; to the Kikuzakura which can have over 100 petals!
4) Shidarezakura
The Weeping Cherry is so named for the shape of its branches, which cascade out and down from the top of the tree like a magnificient fountain of tears. Some varieties of Weeping Cherries have five petals per blossom; can you guess the name for those that have more than five? Yaeshidarezakura.
5) Edohigan
The Edohigan was named because it bloomed during the spring equinox (higan). It is one of the wild varieties of five-petalled sakura form which the Yoshino Cherry was bred. Edohigan are also known for their longevity, and many municipalities proudly designate such arboreal landmarks as meiboku (famous tree)
6) Botanzakura
Literally meaning "peony cherry", botanzakura is also typically a generic term, which refers to domesticated yaezakure. There purportedly also exists a specific and largely unknown variety of sakura named botanzakura.
